Born into the 4th generation of the Middle East’s oldest dealership of Oriental carpets, Hadi Maktabi is one of the world’s leading experts on antique rugs and the only one with a professional academic qualification. Hadi initially specialized in Mathematics at Oxford University before completing his PhD in Islamic Art with a focus on Carpet Studies. He has been an advisor to a number of museums including the V&A and the Louvre. A regular contributor to Hali and other academic journals, Hadi taught Art History at the American University of Beirut for ten years before founding his own gallery for antique carpets & textiles in Beirut. His main focus are tribal and village rugs from the 18th and 19th centuries, in addition to royal Ottoman & Qajar carpets which form the subject of his latest research.


In 2018 Hadi was the recipient of the inaugural Carpet Star Award for Exemplary Antique Carpet Retailer, presented by Carpet Collector Magazine (Hamburg) and Domotex Trade Fair (Hanover). That same year he curated the carpet section of the landmark exhibition of Qajar Arts at the Louvre, L’Empire Des Roses, towards which he lent the museum four royal Qajar carpets from his collection. He has also advised, worked with and in various international museums such as the Victoria & Albert Museum (London), the Musée Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac (Paris), the Carpet Museum of Iran (Tehran), the Imam Reza Shrine Museum (Mashhad) among others. Antique artworks from the gallery's collection may be found in the Musée Quai Branly and the Nickel Art Galleries in the University of Calgary as well as various leading private collections in North America, Europe, the Middle East and the East Asia.

Hadi believes that each antique carpet tells its own story and that acquiring these awesome objects carries a responsibility to act as a custodian or guardian. For this reason Hadi insists on offering a personalised experience when it comes to buying rugs: no two rugs are the same but equally no two buyers are the same.
