Story

How peculiar! I immediately bought this charming Malayer when a Bavarian collector offered it to me. It came with a graceful design and charming colors-- and a rather puzzling inscription in each end border .. which turned out to read ST AUSTELL PARISH. That alerted me to the rug's past history as being in a parish church, somewhere in England. Some historical digging led me to the little village of St Austell in Cornwall, famous for its 13th Century Parish Church that celebrated a 6th Century Cornish saint, St Austol, whose feast day falls on .. my birthday! Karma.

Another unique masterpiece.

Hana Chidiac, Curator of the Middle East Department at the Musee Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, Paris, France 🇫🇷
