Before there was Hereke, the Ottoman Sultans offered patronage to the royal Feshane workshop in Istanbul itself. The name means ππ€πͺπ¨π π€π πππ¨ after the famous Moroccan city and its famous hats. You guessed it: the famous Ottoman Tarboush hats π© were made in Feshane with fabulous merinos wool. And thatβs where the carpets of the 19th century Ottoman palaces came from. Sultan Mahmud IIβthe great Ottoman reformerβestablished the Feshane weaving factory in 1833 (193 years ago!) in Istanbul.
Hereβs a grandiose example of what the tasteful folks there were up to. Like this azure stunner. With its dramatic open field and gorgeous reds. Enjoy. Youβre welcome π

βYou donβt just buy a rug from Dr Maktabi... Itβs an experience, a rich one! You learn about history, culture & art. And more importantly you feel euphoric!β Dr Siamak Abolhassani, Expert Medical Care Clinics, Victoria, Australia π¦πΊ
I must say this one of the most enriching carpet purchase experiences I ever had. This was not a mere transaction but more an experience about art and history. Dr Maktabi's experience and knowledge in this space is second to none. Highly recommended! R.A., Doha, Qatar
