I promised you only the best of everything as well as the most exclusive rugs in the world. Today we go back 1,500 years to the year 531 when Justinian the Law Giver was Emperor of the Romans. The builder of Hagia Sophia. They werenโt known as Byzantines yet but were already Christian.
In a remote corner of Jordan lies Mount Nรฉbo where the Prophet Moses (Musa/Moshe/Moรฏse) was allegedly buried. A number of churches and monasteries were built there for the faithful to worship and pray.
There, inside a 6th century baptistery, archaeologists discovered a โfloor paintingโ of very surprising motifs: exotic wild beasts ๐ฆ ๐ฆ ๐ ๐ฆ and pastoral scenes in ancient costume.
There also was an imposing, very lengthy inscription in Ancient Greek which said:
By the divine grace, under our most God-loving father and shepherd Elias the bishop, the holy diaconicum of God was rebuilt and adorned with the holy baptismal font of rebirth and the most graceful cup, through the effort of Elias the hegumen and priest, under the consulate of Flavius Lampadius and Flavius Orestes the most illustrious, the month of August, 9th indiction, the year 425 of the province. For the salvation of Muselius the scholastic and his wife Sergo. For the salvation of Philadelphus the scholastic and Gothus the scholastic and of all those who belong to them. Amen o Lord!
Hundreds of years later, before l was born, this historic Byzantine art was faithfully preserved on a pair of silk carpets. Most likely woven by special commission in Egypt in the mid 20th century.
Acquiring a piece from my dear friend Hadi is truly a journey. We start that journey with a lesson and detailed background on any piece that is of interest. After a thorough discussion regarding the chosen piece or should I say marvel, since Hadi's pieces are truly marvels, Hadi guides us into why he would advise us to acquire it or go for another of his marvels that would suit us more than the one initially chosen. This sincere advice always makes us feel that we are generously taken care of by Hadi. The learning process and honesty in guidance make us go back only to Hadi whenever we are looking for our next beautiful piece for our homes. All I can say is thank you Hadi for your impeccable guidance and service. Abdullah Al-Awadhi, Kuwait ๐ฐ๐ผ
I must say this one of the most enriching carpet purchase experiences I ever had. This was not a mere transaction but more an experience about art and history. Dr Maktabi's experience and knowledge in this space is second to none. Highly recommended! R.A., Doha, Qatar
The idea of purchasing valuable rugs and other artwork online from an overseas seller is daunting for several reasons, not least of which is the fact that, not being able to examine and feel the rug for yourself, you are never entirely certain that the origin, age or condition of the rug corresponds with the dealerโs description. For me, I could never take this step unless I had absolute trust in the integrity of the dealer, and my recent experience with Hadi confirms that my faith in him was well placed. Every detail of the antique rug expertly explained by Hadi was accurate and when I finally received the actual rug, it turned out to be even more stunning than his photos depicted. F.
